Changing Exhibits Gallery

The Museum fosters a visual arts program in various forms. With the completion of the Changing Exhibits Gallery in 1982, the Museum embarked on a formalized program of temporary exhibitions each year.  The visual arts allow the expressive statements of a human’s relationship to the natural environment.  A unique interrelationship exists between natural history and the arts.  The Museum strives to explore this connection through a changing exhibit program that supports and complements the central natural history theme of the Museum.

It is in the nature of things: C'est dans la nature de choses-
A collection by Allison McElroy

February 1- May 15, 2008

It is in the nature of things, C'est dans la nature de choses, is a collection of discoveries, experience, and existence. Objects that were collected merely for their fragile beauty reveal upon closer inspection their strength as well as a close kinship to humankind. Scientific discovery has brought us the technological wonder of the computer and the evolution of medicine to fight disease. Over hundreds of years the same experiments have been repeated to prove theories to be true. It is now time to use this knowledge that scientist have equipped us with to help us understand ourselves in relation to the universe.

"The all important first step in our journey to the future is to do things differently: in other words, to be creative. In the past, new solutions almost always involved new knowledge. Tomorrow, however, many solutions will arise when some creative person links existing knowledge in new ways. This will require our separate disciplines to mix more."

President of the National Research Council of Canada, Dr. A. J. Carty
